I have recently returned from a visit to the Czech Republic.
Myself and Ian Whyte stayed in the Hotel Annin which is owned by keen fly fisherman Patrick Jedlicka.
The reason for us travelling there was to attend a Masterclass organised by Lubos Roza.
If you have not heard of Lubos perhaps you should. He may just be the best Fly Fisher in the world.
Of course that is subjective but in competitions he has been twice World Youth Champion. In addition he has been European Champion at the age of 21 and World Champion at the age of 26.
These are all individual Gold Medals and he has a number of team medals to go with those.
So he definitely has the ability to catch fish under pressure. He also happens to be a very pleasant young man who speaks good English and has a willingness to pass on his immense knowledge freely.
I first met Lubos at the 2009 World Championships in Scotland where I was a guide to the Czech Team. I fished with him on Glencorse Reservoir and on the River Tay.
I also fished with him on the Clyde on a Masterclass organised by Dave Downie.
In addition I rubbed shoulders with him at the World Championships in Norway in 2013 and had the opportunity to personally congratulate him in the Czech Republic in 2014 when he had just won the Individual and Team Gold Medals at the World Championships.
So I was looking forward to meeting up with someone who was rapidly becoming an old friend.
We were picked up at Prague Airport by Patrick and it quickly became obvious that he was an enthusiastic angler and that we had a number of mutual friends.
Well that was the start of a brilliant weeks fishing.
Lots of Trout and Grayling caught. A reasonable amount of beer drunk with an odd whisky and good food in a very nice hotel.
Lubos was very informative and helpful and improved our skills no end. Patrick was a fantastic host and myself and Ian had great days and memorable evenings.
Looking forward to going back in the late spring next year.
